Dave Loebsack

Iowa

U.S. Representative, Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District

"In Citizens United and McCutcheon, the Supreme Court has overturned 40 years of established campaign finance law and legal precedence and opened the door to further manipulation of the political process by monied interests. As someone who grew up in poverty struggling to make ends meet, I never thought I would see the day the Supreme Court ruled in favor of special interests over the interest of hardworking Iowans who want and deserve to be heard in Washington. I will do all I can to ensure that power is put back in the hands of individual citizens so the American people can have a truly representative form of government." - Dave Loebsack

About Representative Loebsack:

Congressman Dave Loebsack is currently serving his fourth term in the United States House of Representatives. Dave fights for the needs and priorities of the hard-working families residing in Iowa’s Second Congressional District, which encompasses much of Southeastern Iowa.

As someone who grew up in poverty, Dave knows first-hand what it is like to sit around the kitchen table and worry about paying the bills. Dave will always fight for Iowa families and small businesses.

Dave was born in Sioux City and was raised by a single mother who suffered from mental illness. Times were tough for the Loebsack family. Dave spent his childhood in poverty and relied on the support of his grandmother, teachers, friends and mentors to find the strength to overcome personal hardships. Dave’s experience growing up, with the support of so many coming together to help make his dreams possible, reinforced his desire to make sure that everyone has a chance at the American Dream.

Dave knows that we must build things in America again. His bipartisan workforce development bill kicked off a movement to focus on the backbone of our economy – the American people. Dave’s bill aims to help manufacturing industries collaborate in their community with training providers, colleges, business leaders, schools, and labor to develop and implement ways to not only save and create jobs, but also to save and create entire industries.

Moving forward, Dave will continue to work to reinvigorate our manufacturing base, protect and preserve important programs like Social Security and Medicare, and most importantly, work to ensure that our children are growing up in a country of endless opportunity.

As Dave travels throughout Eastern and Southeastern Iowa, he continues to champion the issues that matter most to our families, seniors, veterans, farmers, students, and small businesses.

Before being elected to Congress in November 2006, Dave taught at Cornell College for 24 years. His wife, Terry, taught second grade in Mt. Vernon for 28 years before retiring. Dave and Terry reside in Iowa City. They have four grown children and three grandchildren who live in three states.
