John Sarbanes

U.S. Representative, Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District

Representative Sarbanes is a proud supporter of a constitutional amendment that would undo the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. He is the author of the Government by the People Act .

About Representative Sarbanes:

I am proud to represent Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives and I look forward to earning your support. As a lifelong Marylander, I am committed to working hard for you and all the communities that I serve in Congress.

Before coming to Congress, I spent almost twenty years outside of politics:

— Working at the Maryland State Department of Education to make our school system the best in the country;
— Representing doctors, hospitals and other health care businesses to build a high quality health care system; and
— Serving on the boards of public interest organizations to protect the environment and ensure equality and opportunity for all Marylanders.

In the House of Representatives, I serve on the Energy and Commerce Committee, which has allowed me to focus on major issues like health care policy, energy and the environment, and consumer protection to name a few. I am also fighting to reduce the influence of special interests and big money in our political campaigns and public policy making process. Our democracy must be citizen-owned and our campaigns funded by the grassroots.

I am one of the few members of Congress that leaves Washington every night to get back home to my family and my constituents. One common refrain I hear from across the spectrum is that we must reform our political system so that it is more responsive to the needs of average Americans. I agree. Together, we can rebuild the American Dream by restoring opportunity and fairness.
