Kurt, a farmer and veterinarian, proudly represents Oregon’s 5th Congressional District. Before being elected to Congress, Kurt established and managed the Clackamas County Veterinary Clinic in Oregon City and operated his farm where he grew and sold organic fruit and vegetables. In 1996 he was elected to the Oregon State House of Representatives, where he was one of five legislators asked by their peers to guide Oregon through the budget crisis of 2001-2002. He served on the Oregon State Senate from 2003 until he was elected to U.S. Congress in 2008. In Congress, Kurt serves as a member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, and is a member of the No Labels Problem Solvers Caucus.
Kurt believes that the elected leaders should draw their power from the people they represent, not from Big Money. That’s why he co-sponsored a constitutional amendment that would overturn the Supreme Court’s ill considered decision in Citizens United. Kurt fights for reform every day, speaking up for all the Americans of modest means whose voices have been ripped away in the whirlwind of special interest money which whips through so much of Washington.
