As a young girl, Sylvia watched her parents struggle to provide for all ten of their children. Since then, she has done everything in her power to give every Texan opportunities to succeed. Sylvia began her career as a social worker, and later was the first Hispanic and first woman to be elected in her own right to the Harris County Commissioner’s Court. Currently she serves as a member of the Texas state Senate and is deeply connected with the community. Sylvia has worked relentlessly with individuals, on community boards, and within the state legislature to create opportunities for Texans from every walk of life.
Sylvia understands her community. She also understands that they are not being represented in Washington. To return power to people means overturning Citizens United so that every American has a chance to be heard.
