Past job: I started my career in Topeka, Kansas as an advocate for victims of domestic violence and later as a member of Topeka City Council. Since then, I’ve run a political research shop based in Florida, worked to elect LGBT candidates at Victory Fund, served as a Chief of Staff on Capitol Hill, and most recently was at the DSCC.
Q. Favorite spot for a coffee meeting : Pret – They do great work on homelessness and hunger, so always looking to support them!
Q. Describe one way how a skill you learned in a previous job helped you in your new job. I was 26 when I served on Topeka City Council and quickly had to learn how to speak in front of a crowd. It was a important skill to hone early. As president of ECU, whether it’s stumping for a candidate or giving a briefing to members of Congress, the ability to speak confidently, concisely and with humor has proven invaluable.

Q. How are you (or your company, org, nonprofit) currently bridging the gap between politics and tech? End Citizens United is the largest campaign finance reform group in the country, but what makes us truly unique is that we are entirely grassroots funded and rely on a number of digital platforms to connect and engage with our three million members across the country. Our members can donate to candidates, connect with their representatives, and organize and engage on the issues of the day thanks to the growing power of digital technology.
Q. Morning routine?
I get up early with my daughter. She’s one year old and her new favorite hobby is that she wants me to sing to her. So breakfast is usually an off-key song while she eats. When I’m on the metro, I try to catch up on the news and read the headlines on Politico, The Washington Post, Axios and The New York Times.
Q. Which Member of Congress is most tech savvy?
One of the most tech savvy members has got to be Rep. Beto O’Rourke. He has used Facebook Live to engage with constituents in an entirely new way. I really enjoyed his road trip with Congressman Hurd this spring. He’s building a grassroots campaign and we are proud to support him.
Q. How do you unwind after work?
I love to garden and grow tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and peas at home. I also love to read fiction and historical non-fiction. I just finished A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles.

Take risks and look for unexpected opportunities.
