Make America Number One

Make America Number One is a Super PAC aiding Donald Trump’s candidacy for President. The group informally goes by the name “Defeat Crooked Hillary PAC.”[1] The Super PAC is ostensibly designed for “donors who won’t back Trump but loathe Clinton”; its name and pro-Trump purpose render that an effectively meaningless distinction.[2] Per major Republican donor Doug Deason, Trump’s staff “signaled to them that Make America Number One was deemed the ‘official’” Super PAC and thus had the sanction of the Trump campaign.[3]

Per Bloomberg, the group originated as Keep The Promise I, one of the Super PACs supporting Ted Cruz.[4] During the primaries, the group was funded by Robert Mercer, a hedge fund billionaire. The Mercers were reportedly solicited by Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner to repurpose the group.[5] CNN reports that the Mercer family will “reinvest in the new group and will actively fundraise.”[6]

The group is headed by David Bossie, who also runs Citizens United.[7] As of May 31st, it had $1.3 million cash on hand.[8]
