End Citizens United: Senate Should Reject Judge Kavanaugh

Jul 09, 2018

With 4 million-member network, ECU will launch local and national grassroots efforts in opposition to Judge Kavanaugh

End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller released the following statement tonight in opposition to President Trump’s nomination of Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court:

“President Trump’s decision to nominate Judge Kavanaugh is a threat to the rights and well-being of millions of Americans. Kavanaugh will side with the extreme wing of the Supreme Court and further rig the system in favor of corporate special interests and mega-donors with radical agendas. Everyday Americans will pay the price.

Citizens United put a for sale sign on our Democracy. Kavanaugh’s record indicates that he will be the deciding vote to cement that decision for decades, giving corporate special interests and mega-donors with an extreme agenda even more undue influence in our democracy. It will allow them to continue to spend unlimited money, often in secret, to chip away at our rights, starting with our access to health care and freedom to choose.

“End Citizens United vehemently opposes Judge Kavanaugh. We are already mobilizing our four million members to pressure every Senator to vote no — and we will not waver in this fight. There’s too much on the line. The American people deserve more than a rigged system where those who write the biggest checks have the biggest say.”

According to a new Daily Beast/Ipsos poll, the role of money in politics is the number one concern for a majority of Americans as Trump considered his Supreme Court nominee. The results echo a poll conducted by ECU last year, which showed that a majority of voters are more likely to oppose a nominee who will continue to allow corporations and special interests to use money to gain influence and drown out the voice of individuals in politics.

ECU has been active and engaged in the battle over the future of the Supreme Court. In 2016, it was the first group in the country to go up with a television ad buy. The $1.2 million buy targeted senators in three states for refusing a hearing on Judge Merrick Garland’s nomination. ECU also played a crucial role in the fight against Judge Gorsuch’s nomination. The group participated in a six figure digital ad campaign urging Republicans not to change the Senate rules; launched a nationwide ‘call your senator’ campaign; created a hub where members could take action; joined The People’s Defense, a coalition of some of the largest grassroots groups in the country that united efforts to oppose him; and joined a with partners to deliver a petition with more than one million signatures to every Senate office.
