Gorsuch Hearing: On Money in Politics, Judge Ducks, Dodges, Evades

Mar 22, 2017

As day three of Judge Neil Gorsuch’s nomination hearings is set to begin, End Citizens United Executive Director Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the first two days of the hearings.

“Senators have repeatedly pressed Judge Gorsuch about the role of money in politics, an issue that’s fundamental to the health of our democracy.  Mr. Gorsuch was persistent and firm on one point: he will duck, dodge, and evade.  When asked whether unlimited spending to elect a candidate can lead to corruption, Gorsuch dodged.  Asked if “dark” undisclosed and anonymous money should be allowed in elections, he dodged.  What type of constitutional protections should be granted to campaign contributions? Gorsuch evaded.  Judge Gorsuch simply refused to share his views or values on this critical issue with the American people.

“Without a clear answer, we are left only with his record, which is abysmal.  It shows that he consistently sides with corporate interests over everyday Americans.  His record indicates that he will allow mega-donors and special interests to continue to spend the unlimited and undisclosed money that has polluted our politics, led to gridlock and dysfunction in Washington, and drown out the voices of American families.

“The American people want and deserve a justice who will protect their rights and not sell them out to Big Money.  Judge Neil Gorsuch is not that person.”
