The Susan B. Anthony List is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit. Its stated mission is to “emphasize the election, education, promotion, and mobilization of pro-life women.” The group was active in 2012, but made its mark on competitive southern Senate races in 2014. Its Super PAC arm, Women Speak Out PAC, spent over $250,000 each to help elect anti-choice candidates in North Carolina, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Kansas.
The SBA List and Women Speak Out have a history of supporting controversial candidates. After Rep. Todd Akin’s attempt to distinguish “legitimate rape” in 2012 drew criticism from Democrats and Republicans alike, SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser said that Akin “has been an excellent partner in the fight for the unborn.” In that same year, when Senate candidate Richard Mourdock suggested that pregnancy resulting from rape was “something that God intended,” the SBA List similarly issued a supportive statement.
