WASHINGTON – Today, End Citizens United (ECU) PAC officially endorsed U.S. Representative Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) for the U.S. Senate in Illinois in 2016. End Citizens United is a grassroots-funded organization that is dedicated to electing members of Congress who will fight to overturn Citizens United and advocate for campaign finance reform to remove “dark money” from our political system.
“All across the country, billionaires and corporations are spending record sums of money trying to influence elections,” said Richard Carbo, Communications Director for End Citizens United. “In order to undo the damage brought on by Citizens United, we need to elect bold leaders who will champion campaign finance reform in Congress. We need Rep. Duckworth in the U.S. Senate to end the flood of dark money that is corrupting our political system. End Citizens United is proud to endorse her campaign, and we look forward to working to elect her next year.”
“It’s clear that money plays too big of a role in politics,” said Rep. Duckworth. “Citizens United gives out-of-state billionaires and corporations an unfair advantage over Illinoisans when it comes to electing our leaders. We need to reverse this decision once and for all so that every American can have an equal say in who represents them. I’m proud to have the support of End Citizens United, and I look forward to working with them to bring meaningful change to the electoral process.”
End Citizens United supports candidates who are committed to campaign finance reform. In her first year in Congress, Rep. Duckworth cosponsored a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. She has remained a champion on these issues in the House of Representatives, supporting important legislation such as the DISCLOSE Act, the Government by the People Act, and the Close the Floodgates Act. Each of these bills helps repair a system that has left corporations and billionaires at an unfair advantage over middle-class Illinoisans.
End Citizens United PAC was established in March 2015 to counter the disastrous effects of Citizens United and reform our campaign finance system. ECU has raised nearly $3 million from more than 150,000 contributions, with an average contribution of $15. To date, more than 325,000 individuals have signed their name to a petition calling for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United.
