ECU President Joins Sen. Casey, Rep. Wild, and Democracy Reform Champions for Panel on H.R. 1/S. 1

As votes on the For the People Act (H.R.1/S.1) approach, End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller today joined Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), Rep. Susan Wild (PA-07), Pennsylvania Common Cause Executive Director Khalif Ali, and disability rights advocate Jule Ann Lieberman to discuss the urgent need for Congress to pass the bill into law.

Senator Casey and Representative Wild are co-sponsors and leading advocates of the For the People Act, a transformational package of anti-corruption, voting, and ethics reforms. Senator Casey is also a lead sponsor of the Accessible Voting Act, which would ensure Americans with disabilities are able to exercise their right to vote.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD-05) announced yesterday that H.R. 1 would be taken up by the House the week of March 1, reflecting the urgency House Democrats feel to safeguard democracy after the Capitol insurrection and as Republican state legislatures consider laws to restrict voting rights. Representative Wild noted this urgency, asserting: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity… We absolutely have to get this through in the 117th Congress.”

Senator Casey focused on the impact of dark money in politics, saying: “For too long, especially since Citizens United, it’s like we talk about the public square, and there’s some people with a louder microphone and they’re cloaked in darkness… We’ve got to change that.”
