Daily Kos: VIDEO: 100+ House Challenger Candidates Put Congress on Notice

Oct 11, 2018

If there’s anything that unites all Americans right now it’s a belief that our government is broken and big money special interests are to blame. Voters intuitively understand that all of the money spent in politics affects every decision made in Washington, and more often than not, the wealthiest and most powerful end up on top at the expense of the rest of us.

Our broken campaign finance system has been a problem for a long time, but since the 2010 Citizens United decision, it’s gotten exponentially worse. In 2008, before Citizens United, outside spending was about $143 million. Just a few election cycles after the decision, that number ballooned to $1.4 billion, an increase of 900 percent. The end result is that Big Money special interests have outsized influence over the decisions that impact our healthcare, taxes, prescription costs, and just about everything else in our daily lives.

It’s time we unrig this system and restore power in our democracy where it rightfully belongs: with everyday Americans.

As voters cry out for reform, a new class of candidates is responding. In a letter recently sent to Congress, 107 candidates — including 90% of the districts considered “toss up” by political forecasters — called on Congress to make a bold and sweeping reform bill the first item of business in the next Congress. These candidates come from some of the most competitive red, purple, and blue districts in the country. End Citizens United was proud to support the efforts of these candidates and distribute the letter on their behalf. You can read the letter here, or watch this video to see them deliver this message:
