(Washington Post) The National Republican Senatorial Committee, the Senate GOP’s campaign arm, illegally used money from a special legal fund to pay for ads and other campaign expenditures, according to a complaint filed with the Federal Election Commission. The complaint was filed by the Campaign Legal Center, a watchdog group, and End Citizens United, a Democratic-aligned political action committee. National party committees are permitted to maintain special purpose accounts — not subject to the same contribution limits that govern ordinary giving — for such purposes as nominating conventions, preparing for recounts and conducting other legal activities.
