After Weeks Of Pressure From ECU, Molinaro Begrudgingly Gives Up Santos Money

Feb 13, 2023

Over a month after End Citizens United (ECU) launched a pressure campaign to get Marc Molinaro to donate the $1,000 he took from George Santos, Molinaro has finally been forced to begrudgingly donate the money.

“What took Marc Molinaro almost two months to decide should have taken him two seconds–George Santos’ tainted money has no place in his campaign account,” said End Citizens United Spokesperson Bawadden Sayed. “It took a massive pressure campaign for him to begrudgingly donate the money. Molinaro should be ashamed he held onto Santos’ money for that long, and the other Republicans still holding onto his money should donate it too–and do so immediately.”

In January, ECU sent a letter to 12 GOP members of Congress who took money from George Santos calling on them to donate that money to charity.

River Reporter: ECU calls on Molinaro to donate Santos’ money to charity

  • End Citizens United (ECU) issued an open letter to Republican members of Congress who took money from Congressman George Santos (NY-3), calling on them to donate the money to charity. The freshman senator Santos has come under scrutiny for campaign-trail lies about his accomplishments and his heritage, and for alleged improprieties with his finances. “Keeping the money or returning it to Santos would be an endorsement of his deception and corruption,” wrote ECU.

  • Congressman Marc Molinaro (NY-19) took $1,000 from Santos, according to ECU. Molinaro has signaled his belief that Santos should resign in published reports.

American Independent: Watchdog group calls on GOP lawmakers to get rid of money they got from Rep. George Santos

  • The political action committee End Citizens United called on Tuesday for 12 Republican lawmakers to divest themselves of donations they received from scandal-plagued New York Republican Rep. George Santos. At least five of those recipients have already called on Santos to resign from Congress.

  • “You are among a handful of Republicans who have taken tainted campaign contributions from George Santos,” said the group’s president, Tiffany Muller. “Given the long list of lies, likely criminality, and blatant disregard for ethics, transparency, or the truth, we are calling on you to donate George Santos’ tainted money to charity. Keeping the money or returning it to Santos would be an endorsement of his deception and corruption.”

  • The letter was sent to Reps. Cory Mills (FL), Maria Elvira Salazar (FL), Mary Miller (IL), Nick LaLota (NY), Mike Lawler (NY), Marc Molinaro (NY), Elise Stefanik (NY), Claudia Tenney (NY), Brandon Williams(NY), Max Miller (OH), Beth Van Duyne (TX), and Harriet Hageman (WY).

ECU: FEC Filings Show Marc Molinaro Held Onto Santos Money

  • According to end of year FEC reports made available last week, Representative Marc Molinaro held onto the $1,000 that he took from disgraced Congressman George Santos.

  • End Citizens United has repeatedly called on Rep. Molinaro to donate the money to charity given the embarrassing and deceitful scandals surrounding Santos and the likely illegality of that money. Molinaro has also dodged reporter inquiries about the money.

ECU: What They’re (Not) Saying: Republicans Who Took Santos Money Silent on Donating It

  • End Citizens United sent a letter to twelve House Republicans who took campaign contributions from Congressman George Santos calling on them to donate the money to charity. None of the Republicans have donated the money and continue to dodge questions about whether they will, remaining silent on the thousands of tainted Santos dollars sitting in their campaign coffers.

ECU: ECU Calls on GOP Members of Congress to Donate Santos’ Money to Charity

  • In recent weeks, the truth about Congressman George Santos has come to light. Americans have learned that he lied and fabricated every detail of his life in order to deceive voters of New York’s 3rd Congressional District.

  • Santos is facing several investigations, at the local, federal, and international level, and is the subject of multiple legal and ethics complaints, including three from End Citizens United. In particular, Santos is accused of using a shell company to hide the true sources of the $700,000 loan he made to his campaign. He also failed to follow the law by filing his financial disclosures inaccurately and with concerning omissions. It is an unacceptable level of dishonesty, unethical behavior, and corruption.

  • Given the long list of lies, likely criminality, and blatant disregard for ethics, transparency, or the truth, we are calling on you to donate George Santos’ tainted money to charity. Keeping the money or returning it to Santos would be an endorsement of his deception and corruption.
