Ahead of GOP Primary, Pro-Democracy and Abortion Rights Groups Join New Hampshire Democrats to Blast MAGA Extremism

Jan 22, 2024

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Marking the anniversaries of the Roe v. Wade and Citizens United v. FEC decisions, pro-democracy and abortion rights organizations joined the entire federal New Hampshire delegation, local officials, and residents at a press conference today to highlight the threat MAGA Republicans pose to our democracy, rights, and freedoms.

End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller and Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju were joined by U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan, U.S. Representatives Annie Kuster and Chris Pappas, State Senate Democratic Leader Donna Soucy, State Representative and Deputy House Democratic Leader Alexis Simpson, and local New Hampshire residents.

“Yesterday was the 14th anniversary of the disastrous Citizens United decision—which made it easier than ever for special interests and billionaires to hijack our democracy—today is the 51st anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, and tomorrow is the first-in-the nation primary,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “The confluence of these events is a stark metaphor for what’s at stake for our democracy this November. Big Money special interests are buying our elections and orchestrating a MAGA movement that threatens the core fabric of American rights and freedoms.”

“The anniversary of the Roe decision reminds us that this election is about voting for the people who will help end the abortion access crisis,” said Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju. “That means sending President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris back to the White House and giving them a Congress who will send a bill to restore the federal right to abortion to the president’s desk.”

“Reproductive freedom and the future strength of our democracy are on the ballot this election,” said Senator Shaheen. “The anniversaries of Roe v. Wade and Citizens United v. FEC are sobering reminders of what is at stake in 2024. We have seen enough of dark money in our elections and Republicans’ tireless efforts to determine what women can do with our bodies—enough is enough. We must elect a President who will restore fundamental freedoms and amplify the voices of the American people and that person is Joe Biden.”

“With today’s anniversary of Roe v. Wade and yesterday’s anniversary of Citizens United, we are painfully reminded of the importance of our elections,” said Senator Hassan. “Our democracy and our freedoms are once again on the ballot this November, and it was great to join the advocates today who are fighting to protect a woman’s fundamental freedom and prevent the voices of everyday citizens from being drowned out by wealthy special interests.”

“2024 is about the future of our country — who we want to be as a nation. Today, as we mark the anniversaries of Roe v. Wade and Citizens United v. FEC, we are reminded of what’s at stake this November,” said Congresswoman Kuster. “A world where women have the right to make their own personal, private health care decisions and where people, not corporations or dark money donors, have the most say in their elections is possible. But we have to fight to make it a reality. That’s why I’m supporting President Joe Biden, to fight for our fundamental freedoms, build a brighter future for all, and live up to the promise and potential of our nation.”

“Granite State women must be able to make their own private, personal medical decisions – not the courts or politicians,” said Congressman Chris Pappas. “And while a vast majority of Granite Staters and Americans agree, our courts were able to roll back half a century of precedent with the Dobbs decision because the influence of dark money in our politics has enabled radical politicians and judges to play politics with women’s health care. Democracy and access to the rights and care women deserve are intrinsically linked, and I’ll keep fighting to ensure the voices of Granite Staters can be fully heard in our government.”

“Trump appointed the Supreme Court justices who provided the deciding votes to overturn Roe v. Wade, removing federal protections for abortion access. Thanks to Trump, MAGA extremists are empowered to push for abortion bans in New Hampshire and across the country,” said State Senator Soucy and State Representative Simpson. “Now, Trump wants to ban abortion nationwide. He’s made banning abortion for Granite Staters and women across the country possible.”

Donald Trump and the extreme MAGA agenda that has been adopted by the entire Republican primary field is centered around undermining our democracy and ripping away the freedom for millions of Americans to access the abortion care they need, including advocating for a nationwide ban.
