Arizona’s Passage of Bill to Purge 150,000 Voters from Early Vote List Reinforces Need for U.S. Senate to Take Action on Voting Rights

May 11, 2021

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the Arizona Senate’s passage of S.B. 1485, which would remove an estimated 150,000 voters, including 30,000 Latinos from the state’s Permanent Early Voting List, disproportionately impacting voters of color, seniors, and independent voters. Arizona passed the bill and signed it into law as the U.S. Senate Rules Committee is taking up the For the People Act (S.1/H.R.1).

“Arizona has a safe, effective election system that has traditionally been bolstered by bipartisan support. There’s absolutely no reason to make dramatic changes to the state’s election system, especially after having such success with it in 2020. S.B. 1485 won’t bring integrity to Arizona’s elections but will instead put up barriers to voting. It’s a cynical, anti-democratic power grab that works to stop certain people from voting.

“The Senate must pass the For the People Act to equally protect the freedom of all Arizonans and Americans’ sacred right to vote because democracy works best when everyone has a voice. It would counteract almost all of the voter suppression tactics being put into place around the country, including in Arizona. We can only solve major problems facing Arizona families, like health care and prescription drug costs or building an economy that works for everyone, when all eligible voters’ ballots are fairly counted.”
