As Anti-Voter Restrictions Continue Nationwide, the Senate Must Pass Voting Rights Legislation

Dec 15, 2021

“With self-serving politicians and their dark money allies continuing their all-out assault on the freedom to vote, the Senate needs to act quickly to pass the Freedom to Vote Act to protect access to the ballot box, stop partisan gerrymandering, end dark money, and protect against efforts to sabotage our elections,” said End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller. “All signs point to the attacks on our democracy increasing, not relenting, making it more important than ever for the Senate to pass voting rights legislation. They must do whatever it takes to get this bill across the finish line.”

In Georgia, Republicans are considering yet another extreme restrictive voting law, after already passing one of the most egregious and un-American anti-voter laws earlier this year. The new Georgia bill would ban absentee ballot drop boxes, limiting access to the ballot box and making it more difficult for Georgia voters to make their voices heard on the issues that matter most to them.

Republican legislators in South Carolina proposed new congressional maps that are nothing more than a blatant partisan power grab to stack the deck in their favor and lock themselves into power for years to come, denying voters the fair and equal representation they deserve.

A new report from The Guardian shined a light on the dark-money backed network of lawyers who are doing everything they can to limit access to the ballot box, working with dark money groups and self-serving politicians to write and pass restrictive voting laws. Many of the lawyers involved were part of former President Trump’s attempts to sabotage the results of the 2020 election, including Cleta Mitchell, who pressured election officials to only count the votes that benefitted her political allies.
