ATTN: Mitch McConnell: A Violent Mob Tried to Overturn an Election and Hang the VP

Aug 23, 2022

McConnell defends election deniers running for office by forgetting insurrection

Mitch McConnell, who watched as members of Congress were forced to cower in fear as a deadly mob ransacked the Capitol building with the goal of overturning the results of the 2020 election, thinks there are no threats to democracy.

Give us a break. McConnell wants to downplay the threats to our democracy because so many of his party’s candidates this cycle are election deniers who want to sabotage future elections, which is exactly why voters list ‘threats to our democracy’ as the top issue heading into the midterms.

McConnell on threats to our democracy in his own words:

  • January 6, 2021 (before the insurrection) “The voters, the courts, and the states have all spoken. They’ve all spoken. If we overrule them, it would damage our Republic forever… our democracy would enter a death spiral.”

    • 8 members of McConnell’s caucus then voted to, in McConnell’s words, send our democracy into “a death spiral.”

  • January 7, 2021 “[The rioters] tried to disrupt our democracy.”

  • January 19, 2021 – “The last time the Senate convened, we had just reclaimed the Capitol from violent criminals who tried to stop Congress from doing our duty. This mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the President and other powerful people. And they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government which they did not like.”

  • February 13, 2021 “The people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president. And having that belief was a foreseeable consequence of the growing crescendo of false statements, conspiracy theories and reckless hyperbole which the defeated president kept shouting into the largest megaphone on Planet Earth.”
