End Citizens United (ECU) // Let America Vote (LAV) Communications Director Jonas Edwards-Jenks released the following statement in response to Kari Lake’s expected candidacy for U.S. Senate in Arizona:
“Big Lie Lake is the poster child for the out-of-touch MAGA extremism that is a direct threat to our democracy and freedoms. While Kari Lake is more focused on self-promotion and conspiracy theories, Congressman Gallego has a proven track record of fighting for our democracy and protecting the freedom to vote. The contrast in this race couldn’t be more stark and we look forward to making sure Kari Lake loses again.”
Kari Lake built her campaign on advancing the Big Lie and on suppressing voters’ access to the ballot box, including banning voting machines. Before her loss, Lake attempted to sow seeds of doubt in the gubernatorial election, announcing she would only accept the results if she won. She still has not conceded her loss and has looked to overturn the will of the people with false evidence and unfounded claims of electoral fraud—as recently as March of this year. In 2022, ECU // LAV inducted Big Lie Lake into their Voter Suppression Hall of Shame for her shameless attacks against democracy and the freedom to vote.
ECU // LAV endorsed Congressman Ruben Gallego for U.S. Senate earlier this year, praising his dedication to safeguarding the freedom to vote and strengthening democracy. He is a strong supporter of pro-democracy reforms and strengthening voting protections, including the For the People Act and the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. His leadership will ensure hard-working Arizona families are represented and their voices are heard in the government. In 2022, Gallego received an “A” rating on ECU // LAV’s legislative scorecard.
