Big Money 20 Target Rep. Will Hurd Retires Ahead of Tough Reelection

Rep. Will Hurd (TX-23) announced his retirement from Congress yesterday ahead of a tough reelection for the two-term congressman. Hurd, who was named a top Republican incumbent to defeat in 2020 by End Citizens United’s Big Money 20 campaign, is the first of the group’s targets to drop out of the 2020 cycle.

In 2018, 16 Big Money 20 targets were defeated on Election Day. Rep. Hurd is the first member of the Big Money 20 to retire this cycle rather than stand for reelection.

“The Big Money 20 are in big trouble,” said End Citizens United Spokesman Patrick Burgwinkle. “Rep. Hurd’s retirement is a canary in the coal mine for other Big Money 20 targets. The American people are fed up with Washington working for big money special interests instead of them and all of the Big Money 20 represent the worst of Washington’s corrupt system.”

The Big Money 20 campaign is aimed at defeating incumbents who do the bidding of special interests such as drug companies, big oil, and wall street, while also rigging the system. The full list of first-round Big Money 20 incumbents includes: David Schweikert (AZ-06), Martha McSally (AZ-SEN), Duncan Hunter (CA-50), Ross Spano (FL-15), Joni Ernst (IA-SEN), Rodney Davis (IL-13), Mitch McConnell (KY-SEN), Susan Collins (ME-SEN), George Holding (NC-02), Chris Collins (NY-27), John Cornyn (TX-SEN), and Will Hurd (TX-23). Of the 12 incumbents, four are currently or have previously been under investigation.
