More Dark Money Special Interests Rush in to Attack Sen. Peters

Jan 22, 2020

An affiliated organization of Citizens United, the conservative dark money group behind the disastrous 2010 Supreme Court decision, launched an attack ad against Senator Gary Peters

Senator Peters is an original co-sponsor of the For the People Act (S. 949) and has a strong campaign finance reform record

An affiliated organization of Citizens United, the conservative dark money group behind the disastrous 2010 Supreme Court decision, is launching an attack ad against Senator Peters. Citizens United has already directly donated $10,000 to John James, the Republican candidate for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat, this cycle. In 2018, Citizens United endorsed James and contributed $10,000 to his unsuccessful campaign.

“This attack in connection with Citizens United, a notorious dark money group, only goes to show that Senator Gary Peters stands with Michiganders, not special interests,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “Citizens United brought the disastrous case to the Supreme Court that broke our democracy. It’s no wonder they’re now working to unseat Senator Peters, who has worked tirelessly to root out corruption on behalf of Mighican families. Meanwhile, John James is selling out to big money in a desperate attempt to buy an election.”

Senator Gary Peters has a strong record of rooting out corruption and strengthening our democracy. Peters is an original co-sponsor of the For the People Act (S. 949), the most sweeping anti-corruption and government ethics bill since Watergate that passed the House last year. The bill includes a constitutional amendment to overturn the Citizens United decision, the court case which the dark money group brought to the Supreme Court and led to unlimited outside spending in our elections. End Citizens United endorsed Senator Peters for the 2020 cycle.

ECU is dedicated to getting big money out of politics and fixing the rigged system in Washington so government works for all Americans. The reform group has four million members nationwide, including 102,000 in Michigan, and is entirely grassroots-funded with an average donation of just $14.
