Democracy Defenders Lead Charge Against Elon Musk’s Election Misinformation

Aug 05, 2024

Let America Vote (LAV) President Tiffany Muller released the following statement after reports that five secretaries of state sent a letter urging Elon Musk to “immediately implement changes” to X’s AI chatbot Grok, which has shared false voting information to users, as well as reports that Musk’s super PAC is being investigated for misleading efforts to collect voter data:

“With so much on the line this November—from reproductive rights, civil liberties, and our fundamental freedom to vote—it’s imperative that the American people have the correct, most up-to-date election information. But Elon Musk, who is throwing his support and treasure chest behind Donald Trump, is blatantly and maliciously spreading false information to distract and confuse voters.

“Thankfully, Democracy Defenders and Secretaries of State Steve Simon, Jocelyn Benson, and Attorney General Josh Stein are leading the charge to hold Musk accountable and continue to ensure voters have accurate election information. Their work is critical in the fight to combat dark money-fueled restrictive voting laws being passed across the country. We’re proud of their dedication to free and fair elections.”

In 2022, End Citizens United // Let America Vote launched the Democracy Defenders program—a $7 million initiative to support Democratic attorney general and secretary of state candidates in battleground states across the country. As members of the program, Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon and Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who are leading the charge against Musk, yielded crucial victories for their states and our democracy.
