Duncan Hunter Prison Sentence Sheds Light on Culture of Corruption in Washington

Mar 18, 2020

The California Congressman was sentenced for illegally using campaign funds for personal use

Former Congressman Duncan Hunter’s (CA-50) eleven month prison sentence is emblematic of the rampant culture of corruption in Washington. Hunter, who was recently found guilty of violating campaign finance law by using campaign funds for personal use, is one of many politicians who rig the system to their benefit.

“Duncan Hunter’s blatant disregard for the law is an example of why faith in government is at an all-time low,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “Look at any critical issue that impacts Americans’ daily lives, and you’ll see corrupt politicians standing in the way of fixing it. If we want to lower the cost of prescription drugs, expand access to healthcare, and ensure gun safety measures, we must ensure that our elected representatives work for the people, not themselves or their campaign donors. We must pass bold, comprehensive ethics reforms to ensure that our representatives are held accountable to the American people. It’s not just good politics to clean up Washington, it’s the right thing to do to strengthen our democracy.”

Cases like Hunter’s are not unique. In February, Rep. Ross Spano tried to defend himself after illegally borrowing $180,000 from friends to fund his campaign. In September of 2019, former Rep. Chris Collins resigned after pleading guilty to insider trader charges.

End Citizens United (ECU) is dedicated to getting Big Money out of politics and fixing the rigged system in Washington so that the government works for all Americans. The reform group has over four million members and is entirely grassroots-funded with an average contribution of just $14.
