End Citizens United and Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller released the following statement celebrating Black History Month:
“We celebrate Black History Month this February by honoring the history and accomplishments of Black Americans who, throughout centuries of adversity, are central to the fabric of our nation. Starting Black History Month with this week’s 151st anniversary of the ratification of the 15th Amendment, which granted Black men the right to vote, serves as a stark reminder that our country’s long, dark history of racist voter suppression tactics is far from over and that we need to fight harder than ever for equity and to protect the right to vote.
“This past election cycle we saw a renewed, vicious effort by lawmakers, corporations and mega-donors to attack the right to vote by engaging in and funding campaigns to target Americans’ access to the ballot, particularly Black Americans. Following a summer of protests demanding justice against police brutality and systemic racism, a global pandemic that has disproportionately devastated Black communities, and a deadly insurrection on the U.S. Capitol carried out by white supremecists, this Black History Month marks a defining and critical moment in our country’s history and serves as a call to action for us all to fight harder against inequality, including protecting the right to vote, so that we live up to the great ideals of our nation.”
