End Citizens United Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement applauding the House Judiciary Committee for passing the Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R. 4) today:
“Our democracy only works when every American has equal access to the ballot. The Voting Rights Advancement Act will help ensure every eligible voter can cast their ballot free from discrimination. We applaud Chairman Nadler (D-NY), and H.R. 4’s lead sponsor Rep. Terri Sewell (D-AL), for moving this critical legislation forward. We must fight back against voter suppression in every form and work towards the true representative democracy our nation deserves.”
The Voting Rights Advancement Act would restore the Voting Rights Act of 1965 by establishing a policy to determine which states must make changes to their voting procedures pre-cleared by the Department of Justice. Where a threat of racial discrimination is present, it will give the Attorney General the authority to request federal observers to oversee voting.
