End Citizens United / Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement celebrating Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer’s announcement that the For the People Act will be designated as S. 1., to match H.R. 1 in the House, when it’s introduced.
“The events of the past two weeks have made it clear that we need bold, comprehensive action to restore public faith in our elections and shore up our democracy for the long term. By designating the For the People Act as S. 1, Leader Schumer has made clear Senate Democrats are committed to creating a democracy where all voices can be heard, the public interest guides decision-making, and people can put faith in their leaders to do the right thing for the country.
“Democrats won control of the House and the Senate on a message that they will take on corruption and make Washington work for everyone, not just big donors and corporate interests. We applaud Leader Schumer, Sen. Merkley, and Sen. Klobuchar for following through on those promises and for their leadership and commitment to reform. Along with our more than 4 million members, we look forward to working with Congress and President-elect Joe Biden to ensure this bill is signed into law.”
The For the People Act (S. 1, H.R. 1) is a transformational package of anti-corruption, voting, and ethics reforms. It would end the dominance of big money in politics, bring dark money into the light, address many of the challenges voters faced in casting their ballots last year, and restore ethics and accountability to the executive branch.
It passed the House with unanimous Democratic support in 2019 and its Senate companion was cosponsored by every Democratic Senator, including Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. During his campaign, President-elect Joe Biden also endorsed the legislation.
