ECU raised and contributed more than $100,000 for endorsed Virginia legislative candidates
This year, End Citizens United (ECU), a grassroots group dedicated to getting big money out of politics, has helped put its endorsed Virginia legislative candidates in a position to win and flip the General Assembly in Richmond. ECU has played an important role in helping endorsed candidates run reform-focused campaigns, while also activating its grassroots network of small-dollar donors to help fund many of these candidates to take on corporate special interests.
For the 2019 election, ECU endorsed 31 reformers for Virginia’s state legislature, all of whom are committed to fixing the Commonwealth’s broken campaign finance system. The endorsed candidates are prioritizing reform measures such as creating common-sense limits on campaign contributions, eliminating Dark Money, and restricting contributions from corporations with government contracts.
In total, ECU raised and contributed more than $100,000 for endorsed Virginia legislative candidates. ECU also mobilized its members for GOTV efforts in Chesterfield, Henrico, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Fredericksburg, and Fairfax over the final two weeks.
ECU President Tiffany Muller, along with Rep. Abigail Spanberger and other advocacy groups, teamed up to kick off three canvassing events for Virginia legislative candidates in the Richmond area.
In October, a group of 32 Democratic Virginia legislative challenger candidates sent a letter to the Commonwealth’s General Assembly calling for the passage of major democratic reforms if elected to the body. ECU was established in March 2015 to counter the harmful effects of Citizens United and reform our campaign finance system. Its affiliated project, Fight for Reform (FFR), focuses on bringing transparency and accountability to state and local elections around the country.
