ECU // LAV Endorses Nan Whaley for Governor

Aug 30, 2022

Whaley has outlined a plan to root out corruption and restore ethics

End Citizens United // Let America Vote today endorsed Nan Whaley for Governor of Ohio.

“Ohio has become ground zero for corruption because Governor Mike DeWine and his cronies are using their power to enrich themselves and their donors. The largest corruption scandal in Ohio’s history happened under his watch and it’s become undeniably clear that he played a central role in the scheme. It has completely eroded Ohioans’ faith and trust in government,” said ECU // LAV President Tiffany Muller. “As the former Mayor of Dayton, Nan has the experience and qualifications to be Ohio’s next governor. From rooting out corruption to bringing new jobs to the state, her vision aligns with what Ohio families are looking for in their next Governor. We’re proud to endorse Nan Whaley, and we look forward to helping her win.”

“Ohio families have been ignored for too long thanks to Governor DeWine’s corruption. As I travel across Ohio, it’s clear that voters are fed up with the culture of pay-to-play in Columbus and are ready for a change,” said Nan Whaley. “When I’m governor, my top priority will be cleaning up the corruption that led to our state being called the worst in the country for public corruption. It’s time to clean up this mess and restore public trust so we can get back to the important work of making Ohio a better place to live for everyone – regardless of their zip code. I’m honored to have End Citizens United and Let America Vote’s endorsement, and I look forward to working with them.”

Whaley is making anti-corruption a key tenet of her campaign, and has outlined a comprehensive plan to combat corruption and restore ethics in Ohio’s state government.

The plan includes:

  • Creating a new Public Accountability Commission to investigate corruption and shed light on political wrongdoing, taking the power to investigate politicians out of the hands of politicians and giving it back to the people;

  • Bolstering funding to the agencies tasked with upholding ethics in Ohio, while aggressively seeking to collect penalties owed to taxpayers;

  • Holding her administration and all its appointees accountable to the highest ethical standards from Day One of her term;

  • Working with the legislature to close dark money loopholes and bring real transparency to political spending.

Governor Mike DeWine is a central figure in the largest corruption scandal in Ohio’s history. After FirstEnergy Corp. spent millions of dollars to get DeWine elected, DeWine installed an industry-friendly regulator who has been accused of taking a $4.3 million bribe and passed a taxpayer-funded bailout of two nuclear power plants that is costing Ohio families $287,000 every day. DeWine is too weak to stand up to his wealthy campaign donors and the extremists in the legislature to do what’s right for Ohio.

ECU // LAV is a leading anti-corruption and voting rights group. The grassroots-funded political action committee raised and spent $65.5 million in the 2020 election cycle to elect candidates fighting to limit the influence of big money in politics and protect the freedom to vote.
