Following ProPublica’s latest bombshell story, End Citizens United (ECU) // Let America Vote (LAV) President Tiffany Muller released the following statement renewing calls for an ethics investigation and the impeachment of Justice Clarence Thomas:
“Time and time again, we’ve seen Justice Thomas make a mockery of ethics laws, rules, and guidelines designed to uphold the integrity of the Supreme Court. He’s leveraged his position of power and accepted lavish vacations, home improvements, and cash. And now, we’ve learned that he’s allowed the billionaire GOP mega donor to pay for his grandnephew’s private school tuition – hiding the payments from his financial disclosures.
“It’s time to hold Justice Thomas accountable for his actions. We’ve called for an investigation by the Department of Justice to look into his ethics violations. Every decision and every gift of his needs to be investigated. Americans deserve to know how Justice Thomas is being influenced by this billionaire and the special interests surrounding him.
“It’s clear that strong reforms need to pass through Congress. The Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act and the DISCLOSE Act would help bring accountability and transparency to the Court. If Congress doesn’t act, Justice Thomas and others will continue to hide in the shadows of dark money.
“We support Justice Thomas’ impeachment in Congress. He has damaged our democracy long enough. It’s time for him to finally be held accountable, and it’s time for him to go.”
