‘Undermining our democracy is the only thing that can unite the House Republican caucus’
End Citizens United // Let America Vote President Tiffany Muller issued the following statement on the Republican Majority of the House of Representatives electing Representative Mike Johnson (R-LA) as Speaker of the House:
“After weeks of dysfunction and embarrassment, House Republicans finally found their Speaker: the architect of election denialism. Representative Mike Johnson’s crowning achievement in his short congressional career has been leading the amicus brief supporting Texas’ bogus lawsuit and laying the foundation for those who voted with him to overturn the 2020 election. It’s clear that undermining our democracy is the only thing that can unite the House Republican caucus. We look forward to introducing Speaker Johnson and his extreme record to voters and ending this dangerous MAGA majority next November.”
Rep. Johnson led the amicus brief signed by more than 100 House Republicans in support of a Texas lawsuit seeking to invalidate the 2020 election results in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, four swing states won by President Joe Biden. The New York Times also reported that in formal statements by House Republicans justifying their votes against certifying the 2020 election, about three-quarters relied on Rep. Johnson’s arguments, earning him the title of “the most important architect of the Electoral College objections.”
