ECU // LAV Statement on Arguments in Milligan v. Merrill

Oct 04, 2022

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement in response to oral arguments today in the Milligan v. Merrill Supreme Court case:

“Allowing partisan politicians to gerrymander and pick voters they want instead of voters picking their representatives makes a mockery of our democracy. Today’s oral arguments make clear that the Supreme Court must uphold and affirm the Voting Rights Act and ensure the increasingly diverse population of Alabama has a representative voice in Congress.”

Earlier this year, a federal court found that Alabama lawmakers violated the Voting Rights Act by drawing congressional maps that failed to give Black voters in the state fair representation. African-Americans represent 27% of the population of Alabama, but under these maps, would’ve only been able to elect their candidate of choice in one district, which is only 14% of Alabama’s congressional representation.
