“There have been too many dark days in this country without justice and accountability, especially in the last several years. Today is, thankfully, not another one of those days. The jury provided a verdict of guilty and, with it, a measure of accountability for the killing of George Floyd. This verdict does not bring George Floyd back or undo a history of wrongs, but holding Derek Chauvin accountable for his heinous crime is an important step toward creating a more just society. As this past week, and the killings of Daunte Wright and Adam Toledo remind us, our work to improve is not complete, and we must continue our fight to affirm justice, equity, and that Black lives matter. The next step in that work should be for the Senate to immediately pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. Our thoughts are with George Floyd’s family and loved ones today, and the people of Minneapolis.”
