End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the House Committee on Oversight and Reform hearing today on H.R. 51, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s bill to make Washington D.C. a state:
“Washington D.C. has over 717,000 residents, the majority of whom are Black and brown, who deserve full representation, self-government and the same rights as citizens living in every other state in our country. Without statehood, Washingtonians’ voices are left unheard on critical issues impacting their daily lives.
“Granting D.C. statehood is a necessary step towards making national policymaking equitable and just. We applaud Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney for leading today’s hearing and Congresswoman Eleanor Norton Holmes for her leadership in this fight. D.C. statehood is critical to building a representative democracy where every American, no matter where they live, is heard and included.”
