ECU // LAV Statement on National Poll Worker Recruitment Day

Aug 23, 2023

End Citizens United (ECU) // Let America Vote (LAV) Spokesperson Bawadden Sayed issued the following statement calling for passage of the Freedom to Vote Act on National Poll Worker Recruitment Day:

“Poll workers are the guardians of the voting process. They serve an indispensable role in ensuring smooth operations at polling locations and assisting voters with procedure and equipment. Their tireless dedication to the democratic process ensures that the voice of every American is heard.

“But since the 2020 elections, they’ve landed in the crosshairs of election deniers throughout the country. We’ve seen unprecedented threats and harassment towards poll workers because MAGA Republicans are dissatisfied with the will of the American people. The result has been disastrous, as election officials struggle to recruit and retain poll workers.

“On this National Poll Worker Day, ECU // LAV recognizes the invaluable contributions of poll workers and calls on Congress to pass the Freedom to Vote Act. The once-in-a-generation democracy reform bill will uphold the integrity of our elections by stopping partisan election subversion and guarding against election interference. These unsung heroes of our democracy deserve the protections and support offered in this bill.”

Policies on poll workers in Democrats’ Freedom to Vote Act:

  • Establishes federal protections to insulate nonpartisan state and local officials who administer federal elections from undue partisan interference or control.

  • Authorizes funds for states to purchase new and more secure voting systems and recruit and train a new generation of poll workers.

Policies on poll workers in Republicans’ Big Lie bill, the ACE Act:

  • Grants unfettered access to partisan poll observers, opening the door for harassment and intimidation of poll workers.

  • Restricts funding to election administrators.
