ECU // LAV Statement on Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing on Restoring Voting Rights Act

Sep 22, 2021

End Citizens United // Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution hearing on Restoring the Voting Rights Act: Combating Discriminatory Abuses.

“Today’s hearing was yet another grave reminder of the reality facing our democracy and the merits of passing the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to protect Americans’ freedom to vote. While Senate Republicans choose to distort the facts and ignore reality, race-based discrimination to disenfranchise minority voters is unfolding at a disturbing rate and it must be stopped.

“Since its enactment over 50 years ago, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 has been gutted by an extremist, right-wing Supreme Court. This, coupled with the over 400 anti-voter laws that have been introduced in 49 states, has done tremendous damage to our democracy. That’s why it is so important that the Senate pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This bill will restore the full powers of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and protect the voice and vote of the American people by fighting against racial discrimination in future voting laws.

“We thank Chairman Blumenthal and the Democratic Senators for recognizing the urgency of the moment and bringing this critical issue before the committee. We also thank Ms. Franita Tolson, Mr. John C. Yang, and Mr. Thomas Saenz for providing the Senate Judiciary Committee with factual, accurate information about this bill. Their testimony reaffirms the fact that the U.S. Senate must pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.”
