Constitutional Amendment Would Overturn Citizens United Decision
End Citizens United Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement praising Sens. Tom Udall (D-NM) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) for their introduction of a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United v. FEC decision:
“The Citizens United decision has polluted our democracy by allowing big money to silence the voices of everyday people. Americans are tired of a political system that too often works for the wealthy and well-connected at the expense of everyone else. We applaud Sens. Udall, Shaheen, and all the other co-sponsors for introducing the Democracy for All amendment and their commitment to unrigging the system and ending the dominance of special interest money in politics.
“This amendment would overturn the disastrous Citizens United decision and give Congress the tools they need to rein in the power of big money in politics and give everyday people a bigger voice in our elections.”
The amendment, which has 45 original cosponsors in addition to Udall and Shaheen, takes aim at the 2010 Supreme Court decision by giving Congress and states the ability to set common sense rules on political spending by corporate PACs, wealthy special interests, and others. H.J. Res. 2, the House companion of the Senate amendment, was introduced in January and has 131 co-sponsors.
Similar language expressing that the decision should be overturned was also included in the For the People Act (H.R. 1, S. 949), legislation that passed the House with unanimous Democratic support in March. It is also co-sponsored by every Senate Democrat.
