ECU, SAFE Launch Ad Campaign in Michigan, Nevada Holding Extreme Candidates Accountable

Sep 27, 2022

End Citizens United (ECU) and Safe Accessible Fair Elections (SAFE), today launched seven figure television ad campaigns in Michigan and Nevada holding extreme secretary of state candidates accountable for their incendiary words and their dangerous actions.

This joint ad buy will cover Michigan and Nevada, two states in which the Republican candidates for this office have been among the most egregious offenders.

SAFE is the independent expenditure arm backed by the Democratic Association of Secretaries of State (DASS).

The ads are the first of ECU’s Democracy Defender program, which the group announced earlier this cycle to expand its focus on secretary of state and attorney general races.

“Secretaries of state are supposed to ensure safe and accessible elections, but instead we have extreme MAGA candidates on the ballot focused on culture wars, rigging elections for their political allies, and radical attacks on our freedoms like ending womens’ right to make their own health care decisions,” said ECU President Tiffany Muller. “They pose a dangerous threat to our democracy, and we will continue to hold them accountable and show how they are not fit to run statewide elections.”

“The Republican Party knows that stripping Americans of our freedoms – like banning abortions – is unpopular, so they are willing to steal our right to vote to get it. If changing the rules doesn’t work, they’re willing to toss out the election in order to pick and choose winners,” said Kim Rogers, executive director of DASS. “We have seen a coordinated attack on our democracy and these extreme candidates are part of the problem. Luckily, voters have a choice. Democracy is a decision. And we’re choosing to save it.”

Michigan: Seven figure joint ad campaign by ECU and SAFE.

  • “In Her Own Words” uses Kristina Karamo’s own words to demonstrate just how wrong she is for Michigan — including highlighting her outsized focus on culture war issues such as womens’ choice and so-called demonic possession over protecting elections and serving the people of Michigan.

  • The ads will run from September 27-October 17 statewide on broadcast and cable.

Nevada: Seven figure joint ad campaign by ECU and SAFE.

  • “Trust” highlights how dangerous Jim Marchant is for Nevada — both for his extreme anti-choice views, as well as for his radical plan to end early voting and vote-by-mail. This blatant power grab by Marchant on behalf of himself and his partisan allies is set in direct contrast with Cisco Aguilar, who is committed to protecting all Nevadans’ freedom to vote and ensuring that every eligible vote is counted.

  • The ads will run from September 27-October 10 statewide on broadcast and cable.
