In the first quarter of the on-year, Andy Kim outraised his incumber opponent Representative Tom MacArthur despite rejecting all corporate PAC Money.
Kim raised $529,590 to MacArthur’s $301,600.
“By rejecting corporate PAC money, Andy Kim is proving to voters that he is committed to getting Big Money out of politics and reforming the rigged system. In turn, he’s earning a wave of grassroots support and outraising his opponent.” said ECU President Tiffany Muller.
While Kim is rejecting corporate PAC money, MacArthur, a member of ECU’s Big Money 20, is one of Washington’s worse pay-to-play politicians. As Congressman, MacArthur introduced a bill that helped one of his big donors but would gut regulations that protected New Jersey families from securities fraud and make it easier for securities firms to engage in similar risky behavior that led to the 2008 financial crisis.
When it comes to choosing between the greed of his mega-donors or the needs of his constituents, MacArthur has chosen his mega-donors time and again. MacArthur crafted a revamped GOP health care bill that passed the House and could have increased the number of uninsured people in his district by 112%.
MacArthur was the only member of Congress from New Jersey to vote against the state’s interests by supporting the tax reform bill that would raise taxes on many middle class New Jerseyans while cutting taxes for wealthy political donors. The bill was the top priority for Republican mega-donors. It would raise taxes on 13 million Americans who earn less than $100,000 a year, while half of the benefits would go to the top one percent in the country.
