ECU Statement on Senate Rule Change to Advance Gorsuch Nomination

Apr 06, 2017

Tiffany Muller, executive director of End Citizens United, released the following statement on the Republicans’ decision to invoke the “nuclear option” to pass cloture and move the Supreme Court nomination to a full vote on the Senate floor.

“A vote for Gorsuch is a vote to keep in place the rigged system in Washington where the people who can write the biggest checks have the biggest say. Judge Gorsuch has ruled that corporations are people, and should he serve on the Supreme Court, we can expect more corporate money to flood into our elections and big campaign donors will continue to have undue influence over our government.

“This will be the first time a Supreme Court nominee who is too extreme to meet the 60 vote threshold is pushed through the confirmation process by fundamentally changing the rules.  When a nominee is too extreme, you should change the nominee, not the rules. Senate Republicans willingness to take these drastic steps demonstrates just how far they’ll go to protect the special interests bankrolling their campaigns instead of the American people.”
