End Citizens United and Let America Vote Congratulate Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger on General Election Win in VA-07

Nov 04, 2020

Spanberger rejects corporate PAC money and led the charge to pass the For the People Act, a once-in-a-generation reform bill

End Citizens United (ECU) and Let America Vote (LAV) President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on news that Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger won re-election in VA-07:

“Congratulations to Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger. Congresswoman Spanberger is a standout member of a new generation of leaders fighting to root out corruption in Washington. She flipped this battleground district in 2018 by rejecting corporate corporate PAC money and committing to putting Viriginians ahead of corporate special interests in Washington. Congresswoman Spanberger’s voting record throughout her first term proves she did exactly that. Her leadership led to the passage of the For the People Act, a historic bill that would crack down on corruption in both parties, protect and restore voting rights and ensure ethics reforms. She also voted for a bill that would stand up to Big Pharma and lower the cost of prescription drugs for Virginia families. Virginians re-elected Abigail because she’s consistently proved that she is fighting for their interests. We’re proud to support Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, and we look forward to working with her to restore our democracy.”

ECU and LAV endorsed Abigail Spanberger for re-election in March 2019 as part of the group’s first round of House incumbent endorsements because of her commitment to unrig the broken system in Washington. ECU had a total impact of $733,100 in this race. That includes both raising and donating $170,100 in small dollar grassroots contributions from its members this cycle to Spanberger’s campaign, and a $563,000 broadcast, cable TV and direct mail ad campaign. ECU hosted two virtual campaign events discussing her commitment to taking on the corruption in Washington and passing reforms to end the influence of Big Money and protect the right to vote. Spanberger, who ran on a platform of reform in both 2018 and 2020, rejects corporate PAC money and showed leadership in the passage of the For the People Act (H.R.1). The reform group has four million members nationwide, including over 7,000 in VA-07, and is entirely grassroots-funded with an average donation of just $14.
