Joe Biden and Kamala Harris Are A Perfect Team to Reform and Protect Our Democracy

End Citizens United and Let America Vote released the following statement praising Senator Kamala Harris’ selection as Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s Vice Presidential running mate:

“Senator Kamala Harris is the perfect choice for Vice President. She has spent her career fighting for a democracy that includes everyone and is committed to creating a political system in which every vote is counted and every voice is heard. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will take on the corporate special interests from day one and that’s why we’re working with our more than 4 million members to make sure they win in November,” said Tiffany Muller, president of End Citizens United and Let America Vote.

Senator Harris has fought against big money in politics since she was California Attorney General, fighting the attempts by a Koch-aligned group to hide their donors. In the Senate she has led on co-sponsoring the For the People Act, the DISCLOSE Act, and a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. Harris also led the fight on protecting voting rights for all Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic, sponsoring the VoteSafe Act, which would authorize $5 billion to expand vote-by-mail and early voting options, and ensure safe in-person voting.

Vice President Biden has already released a comprehensive plan to reduce the corrupting influence of money in politics and has called for passage of legislation to restore the full strength of the Voting Rights Act. He has also said a package of reforms like those reflected in the For the People Act (H.R. 1/S. 949) that passed the House last year will be “a first priority” for his administration.

End Citizens United and Let America Vote are dedicated to getting Big Money out of politics and protecting every American’s right to vote.

ECU has raised more than $100 million from grassroots, small dollar donors since it launched in 2015. The average contribution is $14. In 2018, ECU helped elect 58 challengers to the U.S. House in 2018, helping take back the majority. The group is leading the movement to reject corporate PAC money in elections. Since its founding in 2017, Let America Vote has attempted more than 1 million voter contacts. In 2018, over 1,000 LAV grassroots volunteers knocked on over 340,000 doors, made 111,900 calls, and sent 341,000 texts to help elect 100 pro-democracy leaders.
