End Citizens United and Let America Vote Statement on 155th Anniversary of Juneteenth

Jun 19, 2020

End Citizens United (ECU) and Let America Vote (LAV) President Tiffany Muller released the following statement in observance of the 155th anniversary of Juneteenth, which celebrates the official day Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation two and a half years after it had been issued:

“On this day 155 years ago, African Americans in Texas finally learned of their emancipation from slavery, freeing the last known enslaved people in America. However, while we celebrate this historic day, the fight against racism, injustice and inequality in our country continues. Our democracy has failed to account for the value of Black lives, and the protests around our country are a clarion call for us to change, to be better, and to build an America where Black Lives Matter. End Citizens United and Let America Vote commemorate Juneteenth by redoubling our efforts to build a fairer, more just democracy.”
