Endorses Campaign Finance Reform Champions Sherrod Brown, Tammy Baldwin and Jon Tester
Washington, DC – End Citizens United (ECU) today announced its first round of endorsements for the 2018 cycle with Sherrod Brown in Ohio, Tammy Baldwin in Wisconsin and Jon Tester in Montana.
The decision to endorse early on in the 2018 cycle will allow ECU to connect those candidates with its over 160,000 grassroots members across the three states and run advocacy activities to elevate campaign finance as a critical campaign issue. ECU will also activate its 330,000 small-dollar national donors to help make sure the candidates have the resources to win.
Tiffany Muller, executive director of End Citizens United, shared the following statement on the group’s endorsements: “We’re proud to be standing with Sherrod Brown, Tammy Baldwin and Jon Tester. They are reformers who have consistently gone up against the corporate special interests and the billionaires to fight back against the corrosive influence of Big Money in our elections. All three have seen first-hand how Super PACs and dark money groups have attempted to buy a Senate seat but, each time they’ve won because of their grassroots support and proven record fighting for the middle class.”
In the Georgia 6th district special election, ECU members raised over $700,000 to help elect Jon Ossoff, and on Monday ECU released a digital ad for Ossoff, making it the second outside group to do so. In the 2016 cycle, ECU invested more than $15 million in competitive Senate and House races to help elect 15 new Members of Congress, including Senator Maggie Hassan and Senator Catherine Cortez-Masto.
The news comes on the heels of a series of high-profile announcements by the organization. In early April, the group announced that it is projected to raise $35 million for the 2018 cycle, smashing the $25 million it raised for the 2016 elections, with $4 million already raised in Q1 of the off-year. The group, which was the 4th largest federal PAC in the 2016 cycle, has grown to 3 million members with more than 330,000 donors, allowing it to double its staff since June 2016.
As ECU looks ahead to the November elections, it will also explore the possibility of running paid communications, conducting polling and assisting allies with additional messaging guidance.
