End Citizens United (ECU) President Tiffany Muller released the below statement on Ben Ray Luján’s no corporate PAC announcement:
“Representative Luján’s decision to refuse corporate PAC money demonstrates his commitment to making our government work for people, not special interests. By rejecting corporate PAC money, he’s showing New Mexico families that his priorities are their priorities and their voices are the ones he will listen to. End Citizens United applauds Congressman Luján for taking this bold step towards restoring faith in our democracy and fixing a broken political system that allows special interests to block progress on affordable health care, prescription drugs, and protecting the environment.”
Luján joins Mark Kelly (AZ-SEN), Andrew Romanoff (CO-SEN), Dan Baer (CO-SEN), John Walsh (CO-SEN), Mike Johnston (CO-SEN), Trish Zornio (CO-SEN), James Mackler (TN-SEN), and MJ Hegar (TX-SEN) in rejecting corporate PAC money as Senate challengers.
During the 2018 election cycle, ECU led the movement among candidates to reject corporate PAC money in their campaigns. Fifty-seven members of the 116th Congress are refusing to take corporate PAC money, including 36 freshmen members. The no corporate PAC Pledge elevated the issue of money-in-politics as a top priority in the 2018 election and helped create the momentum led to the passage of H.R. 1, the most sweeping anti-corruption and democracy reform bill since Watergate.
