End Citizens United (ECU) President Tiffany Muller released the following statement on Governor Steve Bullock’s lawsuit against the I.R.S. for eliminating disclosure requirements for political nonprofits:
“Governor Bullock has always been a leader in trying to get unlimited, undisclosed money out of politics, so it’s no surprise to see him taking that fight directly to President Trump’s administration. The Trump administration changed campaign finance rules to allow special interests to hide the identity of their big money donors to make it easier for special interests to buy our democracy. Our government should not be for sale to the highest bidder and End Citizens United applauds Governor Bullock in his fight to reverse this appalling I.R.S. rule change.”
In July 2018, the Trump administration reversed a nearly 50 year-old I.R.S. regulation that required political nonprofits to disclose their big donors to the Agency, allowing the I.R.S. to identify illegal activity, like foreign money in politics. Governor Bullock challenged the decision in court only a few weeks later, personally authoring the lawsuit and appearing as counsel in the case. This week, the Trump administration will travel to Montana to defend their actions before federal court.
