Bullock, a Reform First candidate, wins lawsuit against President Trump for creating dark money loophole
End Citizens United (ECU) President Tiffany Muller released the following statement congratulating Governor Steve Bullock for winning his lawsuit against the I.R.S. for eliminating disclosure requirements for political nonprofits:
“Governor Bullock has always been a leader in trying to get unlimited, undisclosed money out of politics, so it’s no surprise to see him take that fight directly to President Trump’s administration and win. The Trump administration changed rules to allow special interests to hide the identity of their big money donors, making it easier for special interests to buy our democracy. Our government should never be for sale to the highest bidder, and End Citizens United applauds Governor Bullock for fighting to reverse this appalling I.R.S. rule change and his commitment to unrigging the system.”
In July 2018, the Trump administration reversed a nearly 50 year-old I.R.S. regulation that required political nonprofits to disclose their big donors to the agency, allowing the I.R.S. to identify illegal activity, like foreign money in politics. Governor Bullock challenged the decision in court only a few weeks later, personally authoring the lawsuit and appearing as counsel in the case.
