New Package of Reforms Highlights Democrats’ Commitment to Bold Anti-Corruption and Voting Reforms
End Citizens United//Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller released the following statement applauding House Democrats’ introduction of the Protecting our Democracy Act, a critical package of reforms to restore accountability in government and protect our elections:
“Donald Trump is the most corrupt president in history. He has abused his power to enrich himself, his friends, and his major donors while disregarding Congress’ constitutional obligations and undermining the integrity of our elections. The Protecting Our Democracy Act is an important package of reforms that will root out corruption, restore accountability and transparency in government, and help protect our elections. We applaud Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats for their leadership on this important legislation.”
The Protecting Our Democracy Act introduced today has three main components:
-
Preventing presidential abuses of power by reforming the pardon power, ensuring no president is above the law, and enforcing the foreign and domestic emoluments clauses of the constitution.
-
Restoring checks and balances, accountability and transparency by enforcing Congressional subpoenas, reasserting Congressional budget authority, limiting political interference at the Justice Department, and other key provisions to provide oversight of the executive branch.
-
Protecting our elections by ensuring reporting of foreign interference in our elections and clarifying the definitions of what that means for campaigns.
The Protect our Democracy Act follows a long-line of anti-corruption and election reforms that have been already passed by House Democrats, but Mitch McConnell has refused to bring up for a vote in the Senate.
Since House Democrats regained the majority in 2019, they have passed the For the People Act (H.R. 1), the most sweeping package of anti-corruption reforms since Watergate. They also passed the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act (H.R. 4) to restore the full power of the Voting Rights Act; the SAFE Act (H.R. 2722) to shore up our voting systems; the SHIELD Act (H.R. 4617) to protect our elections from foreign interference; the Washington, D.C. Admission Act (H.R. 51) to give DC’s 700,000 residents representation in Congress; and provided states with resources they need to protect their elections amid the ongoing crisis.
