End Citizens United (ECU) President Tiffany Muller issued the following statement praising the introduction of the Abolish Super PACs Act by Representatives Summer Lee (PA-12), Ro Khanna (CA-17), James P. McGovern (MA-02), Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Rashida Tlaib (MI-12), Chris Deluzio (PA-17), and Delia Ramirez (IL-03):
“Super PACs are one of the most corrosive and corrupting forces in our democracy. They have become tools for billionaires and corporate special interests to buy elections and shape policy to serve their interests. It’s why more and more Americans don’t believe they have a voice in Washington and that the government doesn’t work in their interest. The Abolish Super PACs Act is a commonsense step toward rooting out corruption and restoring trust in government. We’re grateful to Representatives Lee, Khanna, McGovern, Jayapal, Tlaib, Deluzio, and Ramirez for introducing this bill. Their continued leadership and advocacy are critical to ensuring our government works for everyone––not just the wealthy.”
Super PACs, which can accept unlimited and undisclosed money, are increasingly pushing the limits of campaign finance laws and acting as shadow arms of political campaigns. In the 2024 election cyle––the most expensive election cycle in U.S. history––over $2.6 billion was spent by super PACs alone to boost their preferred candidates. The Abolish Super PACs Act would cap individual contributions to super PACs at $5,000, effectively eliminating the undue influence of billionaires and corporate special interests.
