Proposals introduced to strengthen ethics laws, fix the broken campaign finance system and empower American voters
Washington DC — ECU applauds the By the People reform package put forward today by Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Congressman John Sarbanes, Chair of the Democracy Reform Task Force.
The comprehensive set of proposals to strengthen our nation’s ethics laws, fix our broken campaign finance system and empower the American voter comes following an election where outside spending, primarily by groups that can raise and spend unlimited and undisclosed money amounted to over $1.6 billion. The reforms will ensure accountability in government after news of a number of ethical infractions by the Trump Administration and campaign along with allegations of campaign finance violations as well as investigations into Russian interference in our election along with collusion by the Trump campaign.
“It’s no secret, the system is rigged,” said End Citizens United President and Executive Director Tiffany Muller. “Politicians are bought and sold by the special interests that can spend unlimited money to influence elections. Even foreign governments can funnel secret money into our elections thanks to loopholes in the law. It’s corrupting our democracy and it’s leaving everyday Americans behind.
“The House Democracy Reform Task Force is taking action,” Muller added. “End Citizens United thanks them for standing up to the special interests and will fight vigorously in support of these reforms to give a voice to the American people.”
