Smith is building a grassroots movement by rejecting both corporate PAC and lobbyist money
End Citizens United (ECU) today endorsed Christy Smith in California’s 25th Congressional District’s special election. Smith’s campaign is taking the bold step to reject both corporate PAC and lobbyist money and is instead fueled by small, individual donors.
“As an Assemblywoman, Christy Smith has been an advocate on behalf of California families, helping to secure access to education and healthcare,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “In Congress, Christy will continue to get results to make a real difference for her community. Christy is rejecting corporate PAC money and lobbyist money because she will continue to fight for Califorians in Congress, just like she’s done her entire career. Christy Smith is the best person to keep California’s 25th Congressional District blue, and we’re proud to endorse her.”
“I’m running for Congress to advance common-sense solutions on critical issues affecting our District, like access to quality education and lowering the cost of prescription drugs. In Congress, I will fight everyday for families in CA-25, which is why my campaign will never take a dime from corporate PACs or lobbyists. I’m proud to have End Citizens United’s support in the fight to strengthen our democracy and make government work better for all of us,” said Christy Smith.
A bipartisan poll shows that a majority of voters see corruption in the political system as the most serious problem facing the country, especially among independents. The poll also finds that unlimited, undisclosed political contributions and the influence of big money in politics are seen as major problems.
ECU and Let America Vote (LAV) recently merged to combat the two biggest challenges facing our democracy: Big Money and voter suppression. ECU is dedicated to getting Big Money out of politics and fixing the rigged system in Washington so that the government works for all Americans. LAV is building a grassroots effort to fight back against voter suppression and protect every American’s right to vote.
ECU and LAV will work to end our rigged political system by electing reform champions, passing meaningful legislative reforms, and elevating these issues in the national conversation. ECU has more than four million members nationwide, including 6,700 in California’s 25th Congressional District, and is entirely grassroots-funded with an average donation of just $14. In 2018, over 1,000 LAV grassroots volunteers knocked on over 340,000 doors, made 112,000 calls, and sent 341,000 texts to help elect 100 pro-democracy leaders.
